R Kelly trial: Day 16

Testimony in the R Kelly. child pornography case came to an end today (June 10) after the R&B star told the judge he doesn't plan to testify in his own defence.

Judge Vincent Gaughan told Kelly he had the right not to testify, and Kelly spoke at the trial for the first time, saying "I decided not to testify."

Also, the prosecution learned last night (June 9) that images from the sex tape at the heart of the trial were compressed and lost significant detail when transferred to the DVD that was shown in court.

The judge reportedly made no mention of this when he dismissed the jury until closing arguments begin on Thursday. The accuracy of the video could be significant because part of the defence's arguments revolves around a mole that appears and disappears on the back of the man in the tape.

The defence has said that the man could not be their client because he does not have a mole on his back, as R Kelly. does.

Gaughan asked the prosecution and defence to work together to resolve the matter, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Kelly faces child pornography charges for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with a minor some time between 1998 and 2000.

If Kelly is found guilty of the charges, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Charlize Theron blasts celebrity culture

Actress Charlize Theron has slammed celebrities who seek media attention in order to further their careers.
In an interview with GQ magazine, the Oscar-winning star said: "It comes across as this really sad need for approval. I've heard people make comments like, 'You don't really want to be in the tabloids but you need to be for your career'. They believe it's actually important. It's not. It's ugly."
She also slated the paparazzi, saying: "Like, your life belongs to us now? That's the deal? I didn't get that memo. It wasn't sent to me and I didn't sign it."
"People say, 'That's your job'. It really isn't, actually. It's not my job to go out there and make an ass out of myself."

N.E.R.D, Seeing Sounds

Remember when N.E.R.D. seemed like the coolest idea music had ever had? A meeting place for all the brilliant ideas running around in Pharrell Williams' mountainous imagination? All the best bits of rock, soul, electronica and hip hop? The electronic element died a death when their In Search Of… debut flopped and was re-recorded with a full live band. The rest of it came a cropper some time around their second album, Fly Or Die, which did neither, but just revealed the leaden band of Chili Peppers wannabes underneath. It also showed that, while Williams' genius in the studio was unquestioned, when presented with a pen and a blank piece of paper his stream of creativity didn't run quite so deep.

Album three reheats much of what's been before. N.E.R.D – Williams, Neptunes partner Chad Hugo and Shay Haley - are still so much better when they keep their rock influences in check and the riffing on the back burner. Kill Joy sounds like a Queens Of The Stone Age high school band, wasting a brilliant squally bassline and loose percussion on a vocal lacking power or drama, while the proggy Lazer Guns should've been left behind with Williams' childhood Star Wars obsession.

But there are moments when it all comes true and the reality of the 21st century's most gifted polymath letting loose lives up to the on-paper promise. Everyone Nose, which mixes up Dirty South rap with hectic double bass and a song about club babes queuing up for nose candy, works precisely because it's so improbable, as do the mutant Anti Matter and Spaz, whose skittering drums and fizzy chorus just about withstand the onslaught of piledriving rock riffs. Seeing Sounds is beautiful in places, but would be more so if N.E.R.D didn’t make a song and dance out of everything inside their head.

Usher - Usher Refuses To Sell Baby Pictures

R+B star USHER has blasted stars who strike million-dollar deals for exclusive baby pictures - insisting he would never use his child to make money.

The singer was rumoured to have attempted to sell pictures of his five-month-old son with wife Tameka Foster, Usher Raymond V.

But Usher is adamant he would never follow in the footsteps of new parents Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie and Christina Aguilera, all of whom appeared on magazine front covers holding their offspring in return for a large sum of money.

Usher has instead posed for free on the cover of a special Father's Day edition of Essence magazine.

He tells the New York Post's PageSix.com, "In no way would I ever pimp out my child for money. I am livid that people talk about my child.

"What makes you a man more than being a father to your child? I recognize I gave anonymity away when I became an artist, but to have people try to paint a horrible picture of what's so beautiful - it's obvious someone is trying to stop something so beautiful."

Lindsay Lohan - Lohans Battle Over Kids

LINDSAY LOHAN's father MICHAEL has re-opened his divorce from DINA because she is "refusing" to allow him to see his children.

Michael claims his former wife has reneged on the deal they made when they split to allow him to see his two youngest children, Ali, 14, and Cody, 11.

In papers filed in Nassau County, New York, Michael accuses Dina of breaching a contract.

He tells New York Daily News, "I gave her the house, the furniture, the dogs, the bank accounts, the $200,000 (GBP100,000) she owed me, just to see my kids.

"She doesn't bring them to see me. I haven't seen my kids in two months. She brought them to Vegas for her reality show, then to California. Before that, she missed 15 out of 29 appointments. She breached the contract."

Michael took action after Dina failed to show at an arranged meeting on Tuesday (20May08).

He adds, "She went to (the) David Letterman (show) She brought Ali. She never showed up or sent the kids. The taping finished before our appointment.

She doesn't care. She does what she wants.

"If I was a maniac, I could understand it. I don't drink, I don't smoke. I work, I go to the gym, I go home. I just want to see my kids."

A spokesman for Dina was unavailable.

Elimination brings "American Idol" to final four

NEW YORK (Reuters) - "American Idol" fans sent contestant Brooke White packing on Wednesday after her performance of two Neil Diamond tunes, leaving four contenders to battle it out on the hit talent show.

White, 24, from Mesa, Arizona, who now lives in Southern California, received the fewest of the more than 45 million votes cast, based on her performance of "I'm a Believer" and "I Am ... I Said," with famously blunt judge Simon Cowell saying he "really, really hated the first song."

White's elimination leaves Syesha Mercado, 21, as the only woman still competing to win the show's seventh season. Mercado barely dodged elimination herself this week, scoring fewer votes than any of the other remaining finalists.

Still singing along with Mercado are Jason Castro, fan favorite David Archuleta and the increasingly popular, at least with the judges, David Cook.

Diamond appeared on the show singing "Pretty Amazing Grace" from his new album. Diamond said he was "very pleasantly surprised" by White's version of "I Am ... I Said," which he called "a difficult song to sing and make genuine."

Still, he said the judges were "generally right on" in their evaluations of the finalists on Tuesday.

White seemed consigned to her fate before the announcement, telling host Ryan Seacrest, "We'll stay as long as we can" when she and Mercado were pegged as the week's lowest finishers, but told they had to wait for the verdict.

When Seacrest announced her fate, she nodded her head, saying, "Yep," before breaking down in sobs. Her voice broke during an emotional sendoff, in which she reprised the song that got her booted from the show.
